Let’s Talk Laundry…

In a perfect world, I would have a whole room dedicated to the laundry.  Ample room to fold and stack clothing, but most importantly, room to let the “good” clothes hang dry to decrease the chance of wrinkles.  (My mother taught me that if you hang them up when they are still damp, and gently stretch them, you never have to iron!  I still don’t know how to iron…)

This was a luxury I had to sacrifice when we made the decision to go tiny!

If you happen to drive by my tiny house on a Saturday or Sunday morning, you will most likely catch a glimpse of a raggedy looking woman hanging clothes out on the line.  (The raggedy looking woman is me by the way, it’s the weekend, don’t judge!)

If you happen to ask me on a Monday morning what I did over the weekend, I will most likely mention something about “putting the clothes on the line” or “getting the clothes off the line”.

These are possible reasons why I’m asked so many times, “How do you do laundry, do you not have a dryer?!”

The answer is yes and no.

We have a combo washer dryer.  Similar to this unit.  LG WM3997HWA Ventless 4.3 Cu. Ft. Capacity Steam Washer/Dryer Combination with TurboWash, TrueBalance Anti-Vibration System, NeveRust Stainless Steel Drum, Allergiene Cycle in White

It is, by far, the most expensive thing in our tiny house, but I couldn’t live without it! IMG_1875

So far it has been fantastic, except for one little thing… it takes forever to do a load of laundry!  I mean, it does wash and dry in one little machine, so there is no “forgetting to switch it over and now it smells like mildewed fish” to deal with!

Yes, that is 2 hours and 55 minutes for one load of laundry!

Back to the constant use of the clothesline… I just love using it!  I’m saving on energy usage, I’m getting a little movement in this body by walking out there and finagling the clothes on and off the line, and the clothes just look and feel better!  Here is the clothesline we have and it works great!

So what about when it’s too cold to hang clothes outside? Well that’s when it gets real creative in the tiny house.  THERE ARE CLOTHES HANGING EVERYWHERE!!!!!  But seriously, we just bought this little indoor clothesline and I can’t wait to get it up and going!Retractable Tension Clothesline with 4 Built-in Hanging Hooks Instantly Creates 40 Feet of Drying Space Includes 10 Clothing Pins by Gideon

So I hope that answered any questions you may have had about doing laundry in a tiny house!  I would love to answer any more questions you may have!
